Annuity Agent Jobs and Careers: Paths, Pay and Licensing

Updated October 2026

Short answer: Many annuity agent jobs are independent, commission-based roles. You hold a state producer license with the life line of authority, get appointed with carriers and earn a percentage of the premium on each contract you place. Common paths are independent producer, agency owner, financial advisor adding annuities and healthcare agency serving retirees. There's no guaranteed income; pay follows production.

Our job is to beat your current annuity commission.

Stuck at your current commission level, or simply want higher commission? Our sole purpose is to scale your business by beating your current commission levels. No matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience — there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp. Established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn much higher too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current commission levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them — with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

What does an annuity agent do?

An annuity agent helps clients turn savings into protected growth or retirement income. Day to day, that means fact-finding, comparing products across carriers, making a recommendation that meets your state's best-interest or suitability standard, documenting it, submitting the application and servicing the contract for years after. Clients are mostly pre-retirees and retirees, and the conversations center on income, taxes, market risk and care costs.

The market is busy. LIMRA reports total U.S. annuity sales hit a record $464.1 billion in 2025, and second-quarter 2026 sales of $121.2 billion marked the 11th consecutive quarter above $100 billion. More detail: annuity sales trends for 2026.

Annuity agent jobs and career paths

Independent annuity producer

You run your own practice, choose your carriers through an IMO and decide how you find clients. You cover your own marketing, E&O and tools, and you keep the relationships you build.

Agency owner

You recruit and support other producers and earn overrides on their production. Some agencies run an LOA model: licensed-only agents write under the agency's carrier contracts, and the agency pays them.

Financial advisor adding annuities

RIAs, IARs and hybrid advisors add fixed and fixed indexed annuities with an insurance license. Variable annuities and registered index-linked annuities are securities and need securities registration as well. See our page for financial advisors.

Healthcare and Medicare agency

Medicare clients are already thinking about retirement income. CMS rules bar marketing annuities during Medicare Advantage personal marketing appointments, so annuity work needs its own process. See healthcare agencies.

Captive vs. independent annuity jobs

Captive agents represent one insurer and may be employees with salary, bonus or benefits. Independent agents can sell for several carriers and, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes, may be paid by commission only. Independence brings a wider shelf and more control, along with the business costs and income swings that come with it.

How are annuity agents paid?

Annuity commission is a percentage of the premium, set by the carrier's comp schedule for each product, term, commission option and issue age. On the BetterAnnuityComp.com starting-comp grid, MYGAs typically start around 1% to 3.5% depending on term and age, SPIAs commonly run 1.5% to 3.75%, and 46 of 68 carriers have a top starting rate of 7% or more. See the full breakdown of annuity commissions.

Licensing and training requirements for annuity agents

  • State producer license. In the NAIC's model licensing act, the life line of authority includes annuities. Pre-licensing education, exams and fees vary by state. Selling in other states takes nonresident licenses.
  • Annuity best-interest training. The NAIC model calls for a one-time four-credit annuity training course. Producers who get the life line after their state adopts it can't sell annuities until the course is complete.
  • Carrier product training. Each carrier requires product-specific training before you sell its annuities.
  • AML training. Insurers must bring their agents into their anti-money laundering programs, including training.
  • Securities registration for variable products. FINRA's Series 6 covers variable annuities, requires the SIE as a corequisite and requires sponsorship by a member firm. States also have their own requirements.
  • Continuing education. Most states require it to keep your license active.

Requirements change, so confirm the current rules with your state insurance department. Our step-by-step guide on how to become an independent annuity agent walks through the order.

Skills that matter in an annuity career

  • A thorough fact-find and the discipline to document every recommendation.
  • Working knowledge of fixed indexed annuities, MYGAs, SPIAs, DIAs and income riders.
  • Retirement tax basics: RMDs, 1035 exchanges, rollovers and Roth conversions.
  • Plain-English explanations of surrender charges, caps, participation rates and free-look rights.
  • A reliable way to find clients, from referrals to educational workshops.
  • Case organization, so applications go in complete and nothing stalls.

What BetterAnnuityComp.com looks for

BetterAnnuityComp.com works with independent producers on a contracted basis, from new producers with no experience to established ones. These are independent relationships, not salaried positions. Solo producers have no minimum requirements: there is no experience requirement and no production minimum, and new producers start at our starting comp. Carriers still require an active resident license with the life/annuity line of authority and the annuity training your state and each carrier require before they appoint you. Financial advisors applying through the advisor application need:

  • 12+ months (1 year) of continuous annuity experience, with no gap over about 60 days. There is no minimum production requirement.
  • An active resident license with the life/annuity line of authority.
  • Your own E&O, a current AML certification and completed state-required annuity best-interest or suitability training.
  • A clean background and no carrier or upline debt.
  • An appointment with at least one annuity carrier.
  • Your own client base and your own tools.
  • A direct application. No recruiters or referral services.
  • An attestation that everything you submit is truthful. Misrepresentation means immediate termination.

Healthcare agencies are exempt from these requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can BetterAnnuityComp.com beat my current annuity commission?

That is our sole job: no matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience, and there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp, and established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn above it too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom and share your current commission levels by carrier. We compare them carrier by carrier and contract you above them, with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

Is there a production minimum for starting comp?

No. Starting comp has no experience requirement and no minimum production, so new producers with no experience start at it too. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp — and our job is to beat your current commission.

How much do annuity agents make?

There's no set amount. Independent annuity agents are usually paid by commission, so income depends on premium volume, product mix, comp level, chargebacks and business expenses. Be skeptical of any recruiter who promises a specific income.

Can Medicare agents sell annuities?

Yes, with the life line of authority, annuity best-interest training, carrier product and AML training and carrier appointments. Keep the two lines separate: CMS rules bar marketing non-health products such as annuities during Medicare Advantage personal marketing appointments. See adding annuities to a Medicare agency.

What is an LOA agent?

LOA stands for licensed-only agent. An LOA agent is licensed and writes business under an agency's carrier contracts, and the agency pays the agent. It's a common model for agencies building a team.

Are annuity agent jobs salaried?

Independent annuity roles are usually paid by commission only. Captive roles with a single insurer may include salary, bonus or benefits. BetterAnnuityComp.com relationships are independent and contracted, not salaried.

What does BetterAnnuityComp.com look for in producers?

Producers at every stage. Solo producers have no minimum requirements, so new producers with no experience can apply and start at our starting comp; carriers still require an active resident license with the life/annuity line of authority and their annuity training before they appoint you. Financial advisors need 12+ months of continuous annuity experience, an active resident license with the life/annuity line of authority, their own E&O, current AML certification, completed best-interest training, a clean background with no carrier or upline debt and at least one annuity carrier appointment. Healthcare agencies are exempt.
