Annuity Commission Calculator: Heaped vs. Trail Comp
Updated October 2026
Short answer: Annuity commission is the premium times the commission rate for the product, term, issue age and comp option you choose. A $100,000 premium at 7% pays $7,000. A trail option pays a lower rate up front plus a smaller trail each year after, usually on account value. Use this annuity commission calculator to estimate both and find the break-even year.
Our job is to beat your current annuity commission.
Stuck at your current commission level, or simply want higher commission? Our sole purpose is to scale your business by beating your current commission levels. No matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience — there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp. Established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn much higher too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current commission levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them — with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

Heaped option: $7,000 paid in contract year 1.
Trail option: $4,250 in contract year 1, then $500 in the first trail year, changing with account value.
Break-even: the trail option gives up $2,750 of year-one cash and passes the heaped option in contract year 7.

| 6 | $7,000 | $6,750 |
| 7 | $7,000 | $7,250 |
| 8 | $7,000 | $7,750 |

The calculator assumes the trail is paid once a year on the account value at the start of each contract year, the account value changes at the rate you enter, and there are no withdrawals, surrender, annuitization, death claim or chargeback. Carrier trail terms differ, including how often trails are paid and what they're based on, and comp is often age-banded. The annuity commission calculator is an illustration, not a quote: confirm rates in the carrier's current commission schedule.
How to calculate annuity commission
The formula is simple: commission equals premium times the commission rate. The rate depends on the carrier, the product, the surrender term, the owner's or annuitant's issue age, the comp option you elect and sometimes the premium amount or state.
- Example: $100,000 premium × 7% = $7,000 commission.
- Age bands: rates often step down at older issue ages. On the BetterAnnuityComp.com grid, Allianz 222+, 360 & Benefit Control+ (10-year) show starting comp of 7.25% for ages 0–75 and 5.25% for ages 76–80.
- Product ranges on the grid: MYGAs typically start around 1% to 3.5% depending on term and age, SPIAs commonly 1.5% to 3.75%, and 46 of 68 carriers have a top starting rate of 7% or more.
Starting comp for every carrier is on the annuity carrier list, and how annuity commissions work covers rates, options and chargebacks in more depth.
Heaped vs. trail: how the comparison works
Some products offer more than one comp option. A heaped, or all-up-front, option pays the full commission at issue. A trail option pays a lower rate up front plus a smaller recurring payment, usually tied to account value, for as long as the contract stays in force and the carrier's rules allow.
The calculator's defaults use the grid's American Equity IncomeShield 10 example for issue ages 18–75: Option U pays 7% up front, and Option B pays 4.25% in year 1 plus 0.5% in years 2 and later. With a flat account value, Option B gives up $2,750 of year-one cash, earns $500 a year after that and passes Option U in contract year 7. Index credits raise the trail base and pull the break-even year forward. Withdrawals push it back, and an early surrender can end the trail.

What the calculator leaves out
- Chargebacks. A free-look cancellation, an early surrender or, on many products, a death claim inside the carrier's chargeback window can claw back commission. Heaped options put more dollars at risk.
- Withdrawals and contract changes. Withdrawals lower the trail base, and a surrender, annuitization or death claim can end the trail, depending on the carrier's rules.
- The time value of money. A dollar in year one is worth more than a dollar in year seven, so discount the trail if you're comparing honestly.
- Your own contract. What you're paid is set by your executed contracting documents and the carrier's schedule, including age and premium bands.

Can BetterAnnuityComp.com beat my current annuity commission?

How do you calculate annuity commission?
Multiply the premium by the commission rate for the product, term, issue age and comp option. A $100,000 premium at 7% pays $7,000. With a trail option, add the up-front amount to each year's trail, which is usually a percentage of account value.
What is a typical annuity commission?
It depends on the product. On the BetterAnnuityComp.com starting-comp grid, MYGAs typically start around 1% to 3.5% depending on term and age, SPIAs commonly 1.5% to 3.75%, and 46 of 68 carriers have a top starting rate of 7% or more. The highest starting comp on the grid is 10%.
Is a heaped or trail annuity commission better?
Neither is better on its own. Heaped comp pays more in year one and limits reliance on persistency once the chargeback window passes. A trail builds recurring income if the contract stays in force. Compare the break-even year, the chargeback terms and your client's age and plans before you elect.
When does a trail commission break even?
It depends on the rates, account value growth and how long the contract stays in force. In the grid's IncomeShield 10 example, 7% heaped vs. 4.25% plus 0.5% a year, the trail option passes the heaped option in contract year 7 if the account value stays flat.
Does the calculator include chargebacks?
No. It assumes no free-look cancellation, surrender, withdrawal, annuitization or death claim. Check each carrier's chargeback window and commission schedule before you elect a comp option.
