How Annuity Commissions Work: Rates and Starting Comp

Updated October 2026

Short answer: Annuity commissions are paid by the issuing carrier as a percentage of the premium the client deposits. The rate depends on the product, the surrender-charge term, the client's issue age and the commission option you elect. On the BetterAnnuityComp.com grid, starting comp runs from fractions of a percent on short-term fixed annuities to 10%, and 46 of 68 carriers start at 7% or more on at least one product.

Our job is to beat your current annuity commission.

Stuck at your current commission level, or simply want higher commission? Our sole purpose is to scale your business by beating your current commission levels. No matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience — there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp. Established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn much higher too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current commission levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them — with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

Annuity commissions explained: rates, heaped vs. trail options, age bands and chargebacks

How is an annuity commission calculated?

Annuity compensation is set in each carrier's commission schedule. For a single-premium contract, the math is simple: premium × commission rate. A $100,000 premium at 7% starting comp produces a $7,000 commission. Try your own numbers in the annuity commission calculator. Flexible-premium contracts pay commission on each deposit as it arrives, and some schedules pay a different rate depending on the contract year in which the deposit is made.

The rate itself is not one number per carrier. It is a grid: product × term × commission option × issue-age band. That is why BetterAnnuityComp.com publishes starting comp row by row on the annuity carrier list instead of quoting a single headline per company.

What determines the annuity commission rate?

Product type

Fixed indexed annuities generally pay more than fixed-rate MYGAs, and income annuities (SPIA, DIA) usually pay a flat percentage by payout type.

Surrender-charge term

Longer surrender periods support higher comp. On many products the 10-year version starts well above the 5- or 7-year version.

Issue age

Most schedules step comp down at older issue ages, for example 7.25% at ages 0-75 and 5.25% at ages 76-80 on Allianz 222+, 360 & Benefit Control+ (10-year).

Commission option

Heaped (all up front) options pay the most at issue. Trail and split options pay less up front plus comp in later years.

Premium and plan type

Some products change comp by premium size or by qualified vs. non-qualified money, and some states use separate product versions.

Your contract level

Starting comp is for every producer, with no experience requirement and no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, or you run an agency, we contract you above it, and our job is to beat your current commission.

Typical starting comp by annuity type

The ranges below come from the BetterAnnuityComp.com starting-comp grid. Each figure is a product's top starting rate (usually the youngest age band and the longest term or the heaped option), grouped by products whose names identify the type.

Annuity typeProductsTop starting comp rangeExample

The highest starting comp anywhere on the grid is 10%, on Mountain Life Skyline Peak Choice (10-year, issue ages 0-80). Ranges are starting levels for every producer, even with no experience; strong producers are contracted above them.

Heaped, trail and split commission options

Many carriers let you choose how you are paid at submission:

  • Heaped (all up front): the full commission is paid at issue. Example: American Equity IncomeShield 10, Option U, ages 18-75: 7%.
  • Trail or level: a lower first-year payment plus ongoing comp. Example: the same product's Option B pays 4.25% in year 1 plus 0.5% in years 2 and later.
  • Split / multi-year: commission is spread across the first few contract years, common on flexible-premium products.

The election is usually locked at issue. For a full break-even walkthrough, read heaped vs. trail annuity commissions.

Annuity commission chargebacks

If a contract is cancelled during the free look, surrendered, or (on many products) ends in a death claim inside the carrier's chargeback window, the carrier can recover some or all of the commission. Windows and percentages vary by carrier and product and are set out in the commission schedule and producer agreement. Unpaid chargebacks become carrier debt, which is why the BetterAnnuityComp.com application requires applicants to have no carrier or upline debt.

Starting comp vs. your current contract level

Every producer, including new producers with no experience, starts at the starting comp shown on the grid — there is no production minimum. If you have strong annuity production to show, or you run an agency, we contract you above it, and our job is to beat your current commission. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we compare your current commission schedule carrier by carrier and product by product, then contract you above it. Agencies also earn overrides on their own downline production and can run either a licensed-only agent (LOA) model or direct-to-carrier contracts for their agents. Do producers have to disclose annuity commissions?

Under the NAIC Suitability in Annuity Transactions Model Regulation (#275), which the NAIC reports 48 states have adopted, producers disclose the sources and types of cash and non-cash compensation they receive and, if the client asks, give a reasonable estimate of the amount. State rules control, so confirm your state's version. See the best-interest checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can BetterAnnuityComp.com beat my current annuity commission?

That is our sole job: no matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience, and there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp, and established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn above it too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom and share your current commission levels by carrier. We compare them carrier by carrier and contract you above them, with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

Is there a production minimum for starting comp?

No. Starting comp has no experience requirement and no minimum production, so new producers with no experience start at it too. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp — and our job is to beat your current commission.

What is a typical commission on a fixed indexed annuity?

On the BetterAnnuityComp.com grid, 10-year fixed indexed annuities most often start around 7% for younger issue ages: 14 of the 20 ten-year FIAs whose names identify them as indexed start at 7% or more. Shorter terms and older ages start lower.

What is the highest annuity commission on the BetterAnnuityComp.com grid?

The highest starting comp is 10%, on Mountain Life Skyline Peak Choice, 10-year, issue ages 0-80. Ten carriers have a top starting rate of 8% or more.

Do MYGAs pay lower commissions than FIAs?

Usually, yes. MYGA starting comp on the grid tops out between 1.75% and 5.5% by product, and it generally rises with the length of the guarantee term, while many 10-year FIAs start at 7% or more.

Who pays the annuity commission?

The issuing insurance carrier pays it under its commission schedule. The client's premium goes into the contract; commission is not deducted from the premium the client deposits.

Can I earn more than starting comp?

Yes. Starting comp is for every producer, with no experience requirement and no production minimum. If you have strong annuity production to show, we contract you above it — our job is to beat your current commission — and if you run an agency, you also earn overrides on your downline production.
