How to Compare and Beat Your Annuity Commission Levels
Updated October 2026
Short answer: Published starting comp is what every producer qualifies for, with no experience requirement and no production minimum — not what strong producers should settle for. To know whether you are paid the annuity commission you deserve, pull your current annuity commission levels for each carrier you write, then compare them like for like: same product, term, commission option and issue-age band. At BetterAnnuityComp.com that comparison is our job: you apply, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them.
Our job is to beat your current annuity commission.
Stuck at your current commission level, or simply want higher commission? Our sole purpose is to scale your business by beating your current commission levels. No matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience — there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp. Established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn much higher too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current commission levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them — with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

Starting comp vs. your contract level
Starting comp is the commission a carrier pays, as a percentage of premium, at the entry level on a comp grid. On the BetterAnnuityComp.com grid the highest starting comp is 10%, on Mountain Life Skyline Peak Choice, and 46 of 68 carriers start at 7% or more on at least one product. That is the level for every producer, with no experience requirement and no production minimum.
Your contract level is what you are actually paid under your producer agreement and your upline’s schedule. Producers with strong production, agencies, financial advisors and financial firms can earn much higher commission than starting comp. The gap between the two is where most producers leave money on the table.
Where to find your current annuity commission levels
- Commission schedules attached to your producer or agent agreement with each carrier or upline.
- The comp grid your current IMO, FMO or NGA gave you when you contracted.
- Carrier agent portals, which usually show the schedule you are contracted under.
- Commission statements, which show what was actually paid on each case and are the best check on the schedule.
If you can’t find a written schedule for a carrier you write, that is the first thing to fix. You can’t compare, or negotiate, a level you can’t see.
How to compare annuity commission levels carrier by carrier
Commission only compares cleanly when every variable matches. Line up each carrier you write and check:
| Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Same product and version | Carriers pay different rates on different products, and sometimes on different state versions of the same product. |
| Same surrender-charge term | Longer terms usually carry higher comp, so a 10-year rate can’t be compared with a 7-year rate. |
| Same commission option | Heaped options pay everything up front; trail options pay less up front plus ongoing comp. |
| Same issue-age band | Most schedules step comp down at older issue ages. |
| First-year and later years | Add any year-two, renewal or trail payments when you compare options over the life of the contract. |
Two examples from the BetterAnnuityComp.com starting-comp grid show why. On American Equity’s IncomeShield 10, Option U pays 7% up front for issue ages 18–75, while Option B pays 4.25% in year one plus 0.5% in years two and beyond. And on Allianz 222+, 360 and Benefit Control+, starting comp steps down from 7.25% at ages 0–75 to 5.25% at ages 76–80. Compare the same option and the same age band, or the numbers mislead you. For more on options, read heaped vs. trail annuity commissions.
What to compare besides the rate
- Vesting and book ownership. Who owns your book, trails and renewals, and when you are vested.
- Releases. How releases are handled if you move, and whether outstanding debt blocks them.
- Chargebacks. The carrier’s chargeback window and how unpaid chargebacks are handled.
- Case management. Whether someone reviews files before submission and chases requirements through issue.
- Contracting speed and back office. How fast new carrier appointments get done, and who tracks licenses, AML and training.
- Tools. Rate tracking, SPIA comparison software and retirement calculators you would otherwise pay for.
Red flags in annuity comp offers
- “Up to” levels with no written schedule by product, term, option and age.
- Higher levels that only apply after production thresholds you are unlikely to reach.
- Vague answers on vesting, book ownership or releases.
- Recruiters promising a level before anyone has looked at your production or current contracts.
Do I have to disclose my commission to clients?
Under the NAIC Suitability in Annuity Transactions Model Regulation (#275), producers disclose the sources and types of cash and non-cash compensation they receive and, if the client asks, give a reasonable estimate of the amount. State rules control, so confirm your state’s version. A higher contract level doesn’t change the recommendation: the product still has to be in the client’s best interest.
