How to Switch Annuity IMOs: Releases, Trails and Red Flags

Updated October 2026

Short answer: To switch annuity IMOs, list every carrier contract you hold, check each carrier's release rules (many require no outstanding debt), request releases where needed, and contract through the new IMO, starting with carriers you aren't yet appointed with. Before you sign, get the new IMO's comp schedule, vesting terms and book-ownership language in writing.

Our job is to beat your current annuity commission.

Stuck at your current commission level, or simply want higher commission? Our sole purpose is to scale your business by beating your current commission levels. No matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience — there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp. Established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn much higher too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current commission levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them — with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

How to switch annuity IMOs: carrier releases, contracting, trails and red flags

Why producers and agencies change IMOs

It's rarely one thing. Comp that hasn't kept pace with the market, cases that sit in limbo, a back office that doesn't answer, a thin carrier shelf or contract terms that limit what you own all add up. Moving is a business decision, and it should be done in a way that keeps pending cases, trails and client relationships intact.

Key terms in an IMO move

  • IMO: An independent marketing organization that contracts producers with carriers and provides comp, support and tools. Our guide to IMO vs FMO vs NGA covers the differences.
  • Release: Carrier-approved permission to move your contract from your current upline to a new one.
  • Appointment: A carrier's registration of you as its producer in a given state.
  • Hierarchy: The chain of contracts through which comp flows on a given carrier.
  • Vesting: Whether your comp, including trails and renewals, keeps paying if you leave.
  • Debit balance: Money owed back to a carrier, for example from a chargeback on an early surrender or free-look cancellation. Chargeback rules vary by carrier and product.

How to switch annuity IMOs, step by step

  1. Build a contract inventory. For each carrier, list your writing number, current hierarchy, comp option, appointed states, open cases and any debit balance.
  2. Read your current agreements. Look for vesting, non-solicitation, book ownership, notice periods and release language.
  3. Sort carriers into three groups: carriers you aren't appointed with, carriers that need a release, and carriers you'll leave in place for now.
  4. Check each carrier's release rules. They vary. Some require a signed release from your current upline, some apply their own waiting or inactivity policies, and many won't move a contract while debt is outstanding.
  5. Clear any debt first. An unpaid debit balance can stall a release.
  6. Let pending business issue. Moving a contract mid-case can complicate commission routing.
  7. Submit new contracting. Complete each carrier's product and AML training before you write business.
  8. Confirm trails and renewals in writing with both the old and new organizations where possible.

Contracting with carriers you're not yet appointed with

This is the easy part. If you've never been appointed with a carrier, there's nothing to release. The new IMO submits your contracting, and the carrier appoints you in the states where you're licensed once it approves you.

Before you solicit, finish the training each carrier requires. Under the NAIC Suitability in Annuity Transactions Model Regulation, producers complete a one-time four-credit annuity training course plus carrier product-specific training. NAIC reports that 48 states have adopted the model's 2020 best-interest revisions, so check your state's version.

Many producers use this phase to widen their shelf while releases process. BetterAnnuityComp.com offers starting comp on 68 annuity carriers and 345 products through one streamlined contracting process.

What happens to your trails and renewals

Business you've already written generally stays under the hierarchy it was written in. Whether you keep receiving trails and renewals after you move depends on your vesting terms, your agreements and each carrier's rules. Before you leave, get clear answers to three questions:

  • Am I vested, and does any agreement let comp be reduced or stopped if I leave?
  • Does my current upline keep any share of comp on business I wrote?
  • Will business I've written stay coded to my writing number at each carrier?

One rule with no exceptions: don't replace clients' annuities to "move" them to a new IMO. A replacement has to be in the client's best interest and comes with replacement disclosures under state rules. Changing your upline isn't a client benefit, and churning creates compliance risk and can cost the client surrender charges.

Questions to ask a new IMO before you sign

QuestionWhy it matters
What is my starting comp by carrier and product, and how do levels increase?Comp varies by carrier, product, term and issue age, and some carriers offer all-up-front and trail options. See how annuity commissions are structured.
Can I see the comp schedule in writing before contracting?Verbal numbers aren't a schedule.
Who reviews my applications before submission?Pre-submission review prevents not-in-good-order delays. Ask what case management actually includes.
What back office support is included?Commission tracking, appointment and license tracking, and AML and training-certificate tracking save hours every month.
Am I vested from day one?It protects trails and renewals if you ever leave.
Who owns my book and client relationships? You should.
How are releases handled if I leave later? It shows how the IMO treats producers on the way out.
Which tools are included and which cost extra?Rate tracking, quoting and calculators affect your close rate and your overhead.

Red flags when evaluating an IMO

  • Won't put the comp schedule in writing.
  • Vesting tied to production quotas or long waiting periods.
  • Claims ownership of your clients or book.
  • Conditions a future release on payments or production.
  • Encourages replacing existing contracts to move business over.
  • Promises free leads or a specific income.
  • Gives vague answers about who reviews cases before submission.

Moving an agency: what's different

Agencies have more to protect: downline agents, override income and the hierarchy they built. The same steps apply, multiplied across every agent, plus a clear plan for recontracting the team.

BetterAnnuityComp.com is exclusive to annuity commissions and powered by BetterLifeQuotes.com, an NGA/IMO Hybrid Distribution Organization. Its offer for agencies includes:

  • Overrides on the agency's own downline production.
  • Keep your existing agents and book.
  • Contracting and onboarding support for your team.
  • Vested from day one.
  • You own your book, trails/renewals and hierarchy.
  • Immediate releases granted as long as there is no outstanding debt to the carrier.

Frequently asked questions

Can BetterAnnuityComp.com beat my current annuity commission?

That is our sole job: no matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp, and established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn above it too. We compare them carrier by carrier and contract you above them, with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

Do I need a release to switch annuity IMOs?

Only for carriers where you are already contracted through your current IMO. Release rules vary by carrier, and many carriers won't move a contract while there is outstanding debt. Carriers you aren't appointed with need no release.

Will I keep my trails and renewals after switching IMOs?

It depends on your vesting terms, your current agreements and each carrier's rules. Business already written generally stays under the hierarchy it was written in, so confirm vesting in writing before you move.

Can I contract with new carriers while my releases are pending?

Yes. Carriers you aren't appointed with can be contracted through the new IMO while releases process, subject to carrier approval, appointment in your licensed states and required training.

Should I replace client annuities to move them to my new IMO?

No. A replacement must be in the client's best interest and requires replacement disclosures. Changing IMOs is not a client-benefit reason to replace a contract.

What should I ask an IMO before switching?

Ask for the comp schedule in writing, what case management and back office support include, whether you are vested from day one, who owns your book and how releases are handled if you leave later.
