Fixed Indexed Annuity Commission and Starting Comp
Updated October 2026
Short answer: A fixed indexed annuity (FIA) is a fixed deferred annuity that credits interest based on an outside market index, limited by caps, participation rates or spreads, with index credits that never fall below zero. Fixed indexed annuity commission (starting comp) is a percentage of premium set by carrier, term, commission option and issue age. On the BetterAnnuityComp.com grid, many 10-year FIAs start at 7% or more.
Our job is to beat your current annuity commission.
Stuck at your current commission level, or simply want higher commission? Our sole purpose is to scale your business by beating your current commission levels. No matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience — there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp. Established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn much higher too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom, and we review your current commission levels carrier by carrier and contract you above them — with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.

How fixed indexed annuities work
The client pays a premium, single or flexible depending on the product, and allocates it among one or more index strategies and, on most contracts, a fixed-rate account. At the end of each crediting term the carrier measures the index's movement using the strategy's method, such as annual point-to-point or monthly averaging, and credits interest within the strategy's limits:
- Cap: the most the strategy can credit for the term.
- Participation rate: the share of the index gain used to figure the credit.
- Spread or margin: a percentage subtracted from the index gain before crediting.
When the index falls, the index credit is zero rather than negative, and on annual-reset strategies interest already credited is locked in. Carriers can generally change caps and participation rates at each renewal, within the contract's guaranteed minimums. Index returns used for crediting generally exclude dividends.
Withdrawals above the free amount during the surrender period trigger surrender charges, and some contracts add a market value adjustment. Some FIAs pay a premium bonus, often paired with a longer surrender schedule or a vesting schedule. Optional riders can add guaranteed lifetime income or enhanced death benefits, often for an annual fee; our income rider annuities page covers how those work. Features, fees and availability vary by carrier and state.
Which clients fixed indexed annuities fit
- Pre-retirees and retirees whose time horizon for this money matches a 7- to 10-year surrender schedule.
- Clients who want protection from index losses plus more growth potential than a fixed rate, and who accept that some years may credit zero.
- Rollover and IRA money where tax deferral and a future income option both matter.
- Clients converting pre-tax money to Roth over several years. See Roth conversions with fixed indexed annuities.
- Legacy-minded clients who want an enhanced death benefit option where one is offered.
Poor fits include clients who need the money before the surrender period ends, have no emergency reserve outside the annuity, or expect stock-market returns. Demand is strong: LIMRA reports FIA sales hit a record $127.9 billion in 2025, the fifth straight year of growth (see annuity sales trends for 2026). Fit still comes first under the best-interest standard. For a side-by-side with multi-year guaranteed annuities, see FIA vs. MYGA.
Fixed indexed annuity commission: starting comp by product
The highest-paying fixed indexed annuities on the BetterAnnuityComp.com starting-comp grid: every FIA with a top starting rate of 8.25% or more, and where that rate applies:

|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain Life | Skyline Peak Choice | 10% | 10 Yr · Age 0-80 |
| National Western | Ultra Classic | 9% | Non-qualified & Roth IRA > $25K · Age 0-75 |
| American National | Rate Constant Annuity | 9% | 20 Yr · Age 0-50 |
| EquiTrust | Bridge (with a long-term care rider) | 9% | Option A · Age 55-75 · Yr 1 |
| F&G | Accelerator Plus | 8.5% | 14 Yr · Age 0-75 |
| Prosperity Life Group (S.USA) | PathWay | 8.5% | 14 Yr · Option A · Age 0-75 |

| Sentinel Security Life | Accumulation Protector Plus | 8.25% | Age 0-75 |

Fixed indexed annuity commission structure
- Term drives the rate. Longer surrender schedules give the carrier more years to recover acquisition costs, so they usually carry more comp. Oceanview's 7-year CapLock FIA starts at 5.25%, while its 10-year Harbourview FIA starts at 7.5%.
- Product design matters at the same term. The 10-year versions of Mountain Life's Skyline Peak Signature FIA and Skyline Peak Advantage FIA share the same age 0–80 top band, yet they start at 8% and 5.5%. Compare products, not just carriers.
- Age bands. Comp typically steps down at older issue ages. The "Where it applies" column shows the band that earns the top rate; older bands on the same product usually start lower.
- Commission options. Carriers label their elections differently (Option A, Option 1, Schedule A). The table shows the election with the highest starting rate. Lower up-front elections may pay trails in later years.
- First-year labels. "Yr 1" or "1st Yr" marks the first-year rate, and some of those schedules pay additional comp in later contract years. Chargebacks apply under each carrier's rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can BetterAnnuityComp.com beat my current annuity commission?
That is our sole job: no matter your current commission level, if you meet our minimum requirements (solo producers have none), you automatically get higher commission than where you are today. Starting comp is for every producer, including new producers with no experience, and there is no production minimum. If you have strong production to show, we contract you above our starting comp, and established agencies, financial advisors and financial firms, and healthcare agencies can earn above it too. Submit your application, schedule a Zoom and share your current commission levels by carrier. We compare them carrier by carrier and contract you above them, with full back office support, case management, carrier contracting and sales tools included.
Can a client lose money in a fixed indexed annuity?
Index credits can't go below zero, so a falling index doesn't reduce the contract's value. Value can still drop from surrender charges, a market value adjustment or rider fees, and the guarantees depend on the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability.
Why do 10-year FIAs usually carry higher starting comp than shorter terms?
A longer surrender schedule gives the carrier more time to recover what it pays to issue the contract, so it can pay more up front. On the grid, Oceanview's 10-year Harbourview FIA starts at 7.5%, compared with 5.25% on its 7-year CapLock FIA.
Do I need a securities license to sell fixed indexed annuities?
Generally no. Fixed indexed annuities are insurance products sold under a life and annuity license and regulated by state insurance departments. The SEC regulates only indexed annuities that are securities, such as registered index-linked annuities, which require securities registration.
Is the starting comp in the table the most I can earn?
No. Starting comp is for every producer, with no experience requirement and no production minimum. If you have strong annuity production to show, we contract you above it — our job is to beat your current commission — and if you run an agency, you can earn overrides on your own downline production.
How long does FIA contracting take?
Timing depends on each carrier and your state's appointment process, so we don't promise a set turnaround. BetterAnnuityComp.com runs one streamlined contracting process across carriers and requests appointments in the states where you hold a license.
